Ironically I recently did something similar for a client with a large product data table.  I wanted to go the extra step and make the entire row of the table a link.
With some research I found this site: http://radio.javaranch.com/pascarello/2005/05/19/1116509823591.html
If you are willing to step into a little javascript this was a great solution.  I tweaked it a bit to still apply my initial style and the highlight style, but that was it.
