Counterpoint On Hosting the Sites You Design

Early in the life of this blog (and my freelance business) I made a post advocating the idea of reselling hosting to your design clients. I came across this post old again as I was scanning the archives. The truth is I don’t host the vast majority of the sites that I’ve designed, even when my clients probably would have been all too happy to host with me. I still agree with all of the points that I made in that early post about the advantages of handling hosting needs. So what gives?

The simple explanation is that I am a one-man shop. I already have a lot of plates that require my attention to keep spinning. When you are freelancing you have to make choices about what you want to do. You just can’t be everything to everybody. When I’ve had to make choices about where I wanted to focus my attention on this business, hosting has always been put on the back burner.

I’m curious how other people feel about this. Do you think freelance developers should focus on the steady income from hosting or focus all attention on building great sites?
