What Goes Through a Potential Employee’s Mind

Last week I hired an assistant. Can I legitimately still call myself a freelancer? Probably not. This gig has grown into something that any casual observer would describe as a fully functioning (albeit small) business. Well, I’ll always remember my freelance roots. I started this business on nights and weekends, and I continued to work from home for almost a year after I decided to give it my attention full-time.

The Mother of Invention

The month of February has meant a lot of traveling for me. I’ve been out of town every weekend. On my birthday, which fell on a Wednesday, I drove an hour away to have dinner with some friends. This means I haven’t had as much free time as I’m accustomed to. My preference is to do things in a very laid back, carefree way; so the past few weeks have been a little stressful. But the amazing thing is I’m getting a lot of stuff done.

Startup Weekend Epilogue

I previously posted about Bloomington Startup Weekend. Before I get too far into this I should disclose that I did not stay for the entire weekend. The event started at about 6pm Friday night and was scheduled to end Sunday at 11pm. I left at about 4:30pm on Saturday. Why did I leave? The top reason is stamina. The process of building a business in just over 48 hours is pretty intense. It definitely took a toll on me.

Adventures in Debugging CakePHP

The purpose of this blog is to share whatever wisdom I accumulate in my business with other freelance web developers. Normally that means looking back at my previous week and trying to identify what I wish someone had told me at the beginning of the week. I generalize that information so that it will be useful to a wider range of people. With this post, however, I feel the need to be extremely specific.
